Week 63 Letter May 26, 2014

Hello Family!
Hope you are all doing well! How is everything going? It has continued to be hot in Mexico, but it’s OK because we have been at the work of the Lord.

Well, the best news about this week was definitely the three baptisms we had! Miriam, Mariane, and Kevin all got baptized.  They were very excited all week long and it ended in a great baptism service at the end.  A lot of people from the ward were able to go.  Mayra gave a talk and it was awesome.  She spoke like she had been a member her whole life and she had been a member her whole life and she has just barely completed a month as a member.  She shared her experience of being baptized with everyone and it really strengthened all of us.  Elder Struthers and I performed the ordinances.  Probably the best part was that Miriam’s husband came.  It was the first time we had met him and we could definitely see the effect the spirit had on him.

Apart from that, we are also going to have a baptism in the coming weeks.  Estefania is still really excited for her baptism.  She also came to the baptism and she really enjoyed it.  She told us afterwards that she wants her baptism to be just like Miriam’s.

She has accepted everything we have taught her so far.  She did have a little difficulty with the ward of wisdom.  She felt like it would be hard to leave behind coffee and tea.  Luckily, mayra and Fredy are a big help.  They assured her that it can be done.  That they were able to leave it all behind to follow God’s will.  We only have a couple of lessons left to teach her and she will be ready for baptism.

The rest of the week went really well today.  We actually learned how to make hammocks.  One of the elders in our zone, Elder Mayers, came over to our house and showed us how to do it.  It was a lot of fun. It took a couple hours and we were only able to make one about 6 inches wide.  But it was really fun to learn!

Thanks for all of your prayers,
Elder Lightheart

Week 62 Letter May 19, 2014

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a great week! We had a fantastic week here in Coatzacoalcos.  This area is amazing.  I am very glad to be serving in in Mirador.

It was a great week mostly because I finally was in my area all week.  We had been really busy recently with mission related travel so it was great to be a little more calm throughout the week.

We did start with divisions (exchanges) this week. Elder Struthers went over to a town called Allende.  A new Elder named Elder Hernandez came over here.  He is from Cancun and only has one month in the mission.  We had a ton of fun and a lot of success.  We gave a lot of extremely good lessons during the day and I felt like we were able to help out a lot of people.  We also were able to help one family paint part of their house.  It was fun to help them out.  Elder Hernandez left super excited about missionary work.

Elder Struthers returned and we continued to have a very successful week.  The best news is we will be having a baptism on Friday! Actually, it should be a family of three: Miriam (the Mom), Mariana (13-year-old daughter) and Kevin (11-year-old son).  Sister Miriam is the daughter of Sister Lulu who was baptized about a year ago.  Miriam is extremely excited to be baptized.  She has changed a lot in a very short time that we have been teaching her.  At first, she did not want much to do with us and nothing with the Book of Mormon. Now, she calls herself a member.  She even came to the church on Friday to help with cleaning the chapel! I'll let you know next week how the baptism went.

Probably the coolest part is that Miriam has two siblings in Oregon! They are from the town of Florence, Oregon.  Hopefully, they will also be able to listen the the gospel someday as well.

Mayra and Fredy continue to be amazing.  Fredy has basically prepared his sister to be baptized in two weeks.  We have a baptismal date set with Estefania for the 7th of June.  He is also going with us to visit a sick brother tonight and he is going to make food for him as well.  I am excited to see him bless the sacrament on Sunday.

Apart from the work, Elder Struthers and I had a ton of fun this week.  We went out and played soccer in the street with the kids and it was a blast.  I am sure we looked like idiots but it was fun to play with the kids.

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

Week 60 Letter May 5, 2014

Hello Everyone!

Happy 5 de Mayo! Hope you are all having a good one! It has been a fun one down here so far!

Sorry for not writing last week! I kind of got a little busy, I was helping out the President quite a bit. I had to go to Villahermosa twice and both times and short notice. It was a great week despite being a little rushed all week.

I was not able to tell you last week but we had three baptisms!!! Two Saturdays ago on the 26th of April we baptized Mayra, Fredy and Anabela. We actually had two seperate baptismal services. We baptized Mayra and Fredy first. Elder Struthers and I had the opportunity to do the ordanance for them. It was a great service. We had lot of members there and they were all really excited to accept them into the ward. Probably the best part was when Mayra bore her testimony at the end of the baptism. She is so happy to be a member of the church. The change in this couple really amazed me and I am glad that I was able to be a part of their conversion.

Anabela´s baptism was also great. Her boyfriend Edgar came to do the baptism to do the ordanance and brought most of his family. It was great to have the chapel full for both of the a baptisms but with all different people. Anabela´s sister, Nadxiely also came to the baptism. It was a great experince for the two of them. Anabela for her baptism and for Nadxiely as she was able to feel the spirit. We are now teaching her and she will hopefully be baptised soon.

Well this Sunday was a little crazy because we had change in bishop. Hermano Fred just became our bishop. It made church rather busy but we are very excited to work with him as our Bishop. We know that we will have a lot of success with him as our bishop.

Thanks for all your prayers!

Week 58 Letter April 21, 2014

Hello Family and Friends!

Another week come and here in Coatzacoalcos. It was another extremely fun and very succesful week.

We did have an extremely fun activity this week. This week was actually the Holy Week here in Mexico as celebrated by the catholic church. So everbody was on Vacation. The church took the opportunity to do FSY this week. FSY invited President Morales to come and so he asked for our help. So we went and gave a class at FSY this week. It was a ton of fun! There were over 1000 young men and women there from all over the mission. We got to see a bunch a people from our past areas and talk with them for a while. It was a little exhausting but a great experience.

This week we had a couple of new investigators in the Church. One was named Jesus and the other Montserrat. It was their first time at church and I could tell that they really liked it. After the services, I asked him what he had learned about during church and he said that he really liked the class that we gifts of the spirit. We talked a little more about them and then I promised him that he could have those gifts, all that he has to do is to be baptized. He acepted a baptismal date for the 17th of May. Montserrat also said that she would be baptized on the 17th.

Anabella, Mayra and Fredy will all be baptized this Saturday!! We already have the invitacions and program done and a ton of the members are going to go! I will send pictures this upcoming week!

Thanks for all of your support!

Week 57 Letter April 14, 2014

Hello Everybody! Family, Friends, whoevers reading this letter.

Everthing is going great here in Coatzacoalcos. It was a great week. It cooled down a little which was really nice. We actually went to Villahermosa for two days as well. It was a little hotter in Villahermosa but that was okay because we were inside most of the time because of meetings. It was good to get back to Coatzacoalcos though.

We went to Villahermosa for a conference with our Mission Presindent. It as a great experience. I really enjoy being able to learn from the Lord´s servants. He talked alot about how the Mission is the changing point in our lives and that the things we do here are what take us to salvation. We also read in First Thessalonians 2 the Chapter heading where it says that the glory of the missionaries is the converts. So the people we convert here in the mission are the glory that we will have in the heavens. It is a cool thought and it has been great to look back at the people that I have helped throughout my mision.

Mayra and Freddy are doing great. We are preparing them for there baptismal service on the 26th of April. This week we went by and went over the baptismal interview questions with them. In that lesson they bore many testimonies of the church. They have a very good understanding that it is the Church of Jesus Christ. They have done a lot of things that have suprised us such as plan a Family Home Evening with a ward member this week! It has been very exciting to see their progress so far.

This week we also set a baptismal date with Anabela. We are preparing her to be baptised on the 26th as well. We had a great lesson with her this week. We taught her about baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. As we taught her how the Holy Ghost talks with us, the Spirit came very strong. The sister that was with us bore her testimony and we then invited her to be baptized. It was a very uplifting experience. Then on Sunday when she came to Church she had a notebook and was taking notes during the classes. I have really enjoyed seeing the change in her until now.

Thanks for all of your support and prayers. I would like you all to know that this Church is true, that this is the Lord´s work, and it has the power to change anyone who enters into it.

Week 56 Letter April 7, 2014

Hello Family and friends!

This week was a great week as well. The heat continues to get more intense. It has been hovering around 95ish. The good thing though is that we are right next to the ocean. So every evening at around 4 or 5 it cools down pretty nice. It also means that the people give us more to drink and they have given us a lot of water of tamarindo. It is one of my favorites so the heat hasnt been so bad.

We had a lot of learning opportunities this week. On Friday we had a conference with our Mission President. It was a great conference, we focused a lot on prayer and the doctrine of it. We talked about how we pray to our Heveanly Father in the name of Jesus Christ and we recieve our answer through the Holy Ghost. It is a simple doctrine but many do not understand it or how to use it. We have to understand who we are talking to, how it gets there and how we get the response. If we understand this we will be able to recieve the answers and blessings we are searching for.

General Conference was also a great learning opportunity. It was great to listen to the prophets and apostles voice again and see all of the people there to learn. My favorite experience was with Pedro. I talked with him a while before the conference and then he kept telling me how excited he was to listen to the prophet. Mayra and Freddy also came to the conference. They told us how they were really praying and preparing for baptism. We were not able to work as much this week but  it was great to be able to learn together from our general authorities.

This week we will be going to Villahermosa for another conference with our president. It will be great to be with our mission president again.

Until next week!

Week 55 Letter March 31, 2014

Hello Family and Friends!

We had an awesome week this week! It did get a little hot down here in Coatzacoalcos but the good news is we had a lot of work to do so we did not really notice the heat. There is so many people here that want to listen to us. It has been great to see the help from the members and the investigators get excited to learn.

So we had some pretty great stories this week. One of them comes from one of the members named Edgar. We were talking to him on Sunday about his girlfriend who we are teaching. He told us that on Saturday he went over to her house to spend some time with her and after a little while he asked her if she wanted to go to the theater. She then answered him that she could not because she was going to the Stake Center. He was just a little suprised. She went to the General Womens Conference this Saturday instead of going to the theater! We are very excited for her. She has a baptismal goal for the 12 of april!

We also had something a little unfortunate turn out great with Mayra and Freddy. They went to church this Sunday and we were in the Gospel Doctrine Class. It was a very good class. We talked about baptism and why we need to be baptised. But at the end of the class, one of the Recent Converts from the ward got up and talked about how hard it was to give up coffee to be baptised but how much it helped her. We had not taught the Word of Wisdom to them yet so they noticed that. Mayra then asked if drinking coffee means that she cannot be baptised. We did not have much time to give her a response and mostly said that we would teach her this week. At the end of church she came up to us and told us that she was leaving church sad. We asked her why and she responded that she had to go home and throw away all of her coffee! What great faith from them. She only heard a little bit about the word of wisdom. She does not even know why we have the commandment and already wants to keep it!

We also recieved a refference from a dog this week. One of the members in our ward has a black lab named Nikki. The dog is way awesome and always come up to the gate so we can pet her. As we were waiting for the family to come out we were petting nikki and a lady passed by. As she passed by she commented on how the dog always barks at her but was very nice to us. And bit by bit we got her address and we are going to go visit her this week!

Thanks for all of your support!
Have a great week!

Week 54 Letter March 24, 2014

Hello Everybody!

We had a great week this week. Elder Struthers and I have been having a great time. He got here on Tuesday for Cuidad del Carmen. He is from Lehi Utah and has 21 months in the mission.

So the best part of the week is that we had a Baptism this week! It was a great service. Jesus, Scarlet and Alexandra all got baptised. There were a lot of people there. I baptised Jesus and Scarlet and Elder Struthers baptised Alexandra. It was really good to see all of the families there. All of the families are not all members and it was great to see their reactions to having their children baptised. I really enjoyed this baptism and just seeing the joy in the families. They were very grateful for the help that we gave them. I am very excited for our next baptism!

Mayra and Freddy also went to the baptism. It seems like they had a great experience. We are focusing on the a lot so that they can be our next baptisms. We are very excited for their progress!
Anabela is also progressing really well but she went on vacation this weeks so we did not get to see her.

Week 53 Letter March 17, 2014

Hello Everybody!

So we had transfers this week! I will be staying here in Mirador but Elder Alvarez will be headed out. Elder Struthers will be coming in his place.

Well its a little sad that Elder Alvarez is going but we now thats where he needs to be. We had a really good week this week. We were able to talk with a lot of people and help them to feel the spirit. I feel that the main reason for our success was a fast we did this week. We were studying together and talking about all the promises that come with fasting. We decided that we wanted that power to help the people here and so we did a special fast asking in particular for that special power that comes with fasting. We really felt it and I learned a lot about the purpose of fasting.

This next week we are going to have 3 baptisms. Scarlet, Alexandra, and Jesus. They are three kids from here in the Ward who have less active parents. Well they were less active. We decided to baptise the three of them together. It will be great to have another baptism here in the ward.

We also have three other investigtors who are preparing for a baptism. Mayra and Freddy are a couple who rent from one of the members in the ward. Mayra is very excited and really wants to learn and join the church. Freddy at first was a little hesitant and listened mostly because of his wife but he is beginning to warm up and wants to know if its true. They have a Baptismal Date for the 19th of April.

We are also working hard with Anabela. She is the girlfriend of one of the members here in the Stake. We had a very spiritual lesson with her yesterday. She really felt the love that God has for us and her boyfriend Edgar helped her a lot. Her really wants her to join the church and has been a great help.

Well we will miss Elder Alvarez but we know that he is where he needs to be. Thanks for all of your prayers and support!

Week 52 Letter March 10, 2014

Hello Everybody!

This week was a little crazy! The weather was all over the place, hot one day, cold the next, windy the other, and raining as well. We were busy and going to all kinds of meetings. BUT, we had a baptism so it all turned our well!

So we had two baptisms on Saturday. The first one was Sugey. The rest of her family had already been baptized but she still was not sure. It was great to help her join the rest of her family in the waters of baptism. The other baptism was Pedro, the brother in the wheelchair. For me, the baptism was very special because of the help of the ward with him. All of the ward was asking about him and wondering how they could help us to help him. One of the brothers in the ward, hermano Fred, baptized him and I was also there to help him in and out of the water.

It was a great experience. A lot of people came to see the baptism and were able to experience the Spirit as those two entered into the waters of baptism. It made me smile at how anxious the people were to see the baptism. Even the people who are not members were crowding around to be able to see what the baptism is. I am so glad that the Lord has given us the authority to act in his name and do baptisms so that we all can return to him.

Well the baptism was a little crazy as well though. We got a call at 4, an hour before the baptism, that nobody had gone to fill up the font. Luckily we were already ready but the problem is that it takes 3 hours for the font to fill up by itself. SO, we took a taxi to get there faster and started filling the font with buckets. Then as we got more help. Elder Alvarez and I took the mop carts outside and filled them up with a faucet. Then we would run them inside to dump it in the font. We probably had a little too much fun with that. However, thanks to our valient effort the font was filled on time!

Thanks for all of your letters and prayers.
Until Next Week

Week 51 Letter March 3, 2014

Hey everyone!

Hope you all had a great week! I had a good time down here in Mexico. We were all over the place this week. Thats because Elder Valenzuela, a 70 of the Chuch came to visit the mission this week.

Tuesday and Wednesday we went to Minatitlan. And then Friday and Saturday we went to Villahermosa. We did not have too much time to work in our area, but sure learned a lot. I think what I liked the most was when he talked about the power of prayer. He shared with us 3 Nephi 19:19-24 which says:

And it came to pass that Jesus departed out of the midst ofthem, and went little way off from them and abowed himself to the earth, and he said:
20 Father, thank thee that thou hast given the Holy Ghost untothese whom have achosenand it is because of their belief in methat have chosen them out of the world.
21 Father, pray thee that thou wilt give the Holy Ghost unto allthem that shall believe in their words.
22 Father, thou hast given them the Holy Ghost because theybelieve in ameand thou seest that they believe in me becausethou hearest them, and they pray unto me; and they pray unto mebecause am with them.
So if we believe in his words and pray unto him we will have the Holy Ghost with us. He then urged us to pray more. He told us that we should always be looking for opportunities to pray. To use this tool that the Lord has given us to communicate with our Father. As we use prayer with faith, I know that we can recieve the answer.
I also really felt the importance of having inspired leaders in the Church. I know that God guides and directs the leaders he has called. Each and every one of them has not only the ability but the right to recieve revelation from God to do the work in there organazations. As we work with and through these leaders, miracles do happen.
Well We are going to have a baptism this week!! Elder Alvarez and I are going to do the baptism together! Ok well Technically I am going to be the only one but since the brother is in a Wheelchair Elder Alvarez will be there to help me out. I am excited for to see him baptized. We will also be baptizing Sugey!
Well thanks for all of your support and prayers!
Until Next Week

Week 50 Letter February 24, 2014

Hello Everybody!

I had a great week here in Mexico. It is starting to get hot down here but I am pretty much used to it know which is the good thing. Also here in Coatzacoalcos the wind is really helpful. Every evening there is always a nice breeze which makes it much more comfortable.

This week we taught Pedro alot this week. He is really excited to b baptized. He has been asking a lot how it is going to be. We will be baptizing him the 8th of March. I am very excited for him. This week, one day as we entered the house he told another brother who was with us that you could say that he is Mormon already!

We are also going to be baptizing Sugey the 8th of March. We taught her the Plan of Salvation this week. It is always great to be able to teach to families the Plan of Salvation. Especially inviting them to be baptized in that lesson. It is like inviting them to live together forever. We also taught her about fasting and she said that she is going to fast this Sunday!

Well those two baptisms are going to be part of a Stake Activity `bautizabado.` Baptisaturday I guess it would be. We are going to have about 12 baptisms that day. It will be a great experience to see all of them take part of that sacred covenant together. I am glad that two of the people that I was able to teach will be baptized that day.

This week we are going to super busy. Elder Valenzuela, one of the Area Presidents here in Mexico, is coming this week and we are going to have 3 meetings with him. Two of them will be in Minatitlan which is about 30 minutes away but the other will be in Villahermosa on Saturday. I am very excited to learn from him this week. It is always great to learn from the general authorities.

Well thats all for know! Until next week!

Week 48 Letter February 10, 2014

Hello Everyone!

Hope you all had a good week this week! I sure did. My new area is fantastic! The bishop and ward mission leader are a great help to us already. Without them I dont know where we would be. Elder Alvarez is also new to this area so when we got here we did not know anything. Basically we only knew where the house was. The first day was a little hard. We used a little map to get around. But Wednesday the Bishop and Ward mission Leader went out and did visits with us. It was great. We were albe to get to know almost all the members and investigators of the area in just one week. The only bad thing so far is that our bishop left on vacation!

We already have a couple of baptisms planned. One is for an older man named Pedro. He is a great investigator. So far we were only able to have two lessons with him. We focused on who is god and what are prophets. In the second lesson we asked him if he would pray to know if the Church was true. He told us then that he did not doubt that it was true that in fact he knew that it was true! We are very excited for him and invited him to go to church. It was a little difficult because he is in a wheelchair. He told us that he did not really want to be out of the house to long. But when he got there I could tell that he felt the spirit and the love of the members for him.

The Church is really such a special place. Sometimes we forget because we go every week but it is the house of the Lord. The Spirit is always there. If we pay attention the Spirit will be able to talk to us. Our questions can be answered and our spirit filled.

We are also preparing another investigator named Sujei to be baptized. She is from a member family and is going to be baptized on her birthday the 8th of march. Her 3 siblings were baptized in November but she wanted to wait to be baptized with her dad. Her dad still has not accepted a date yet but we are working on that.

Elder Alvarez and I have been having a great time together! He is a great companion and I have already learned a lot from him. We have spent pretty much the whole time laughing and smiling.

Well I hope you are all doing well!

Week 47 Letter February 3, 2014

Mijail (Young Elder Lightheart)

Rafa, Elder Navarro, and Elder Lightheart
Hey everybody,

Some news for you all! I have been transferred. Real quick and not what I was expecting exactly. I am going to be a Zone Leader in Coatzacoalcos. My companion is Elder Alvarez and we will be doing another whitewash. I am excited but a little nervous. It will be a great experience.

Reforma was a great area. Though I did not have a baptism here my companion is going to have several. This week we gave a lesson to an investigator named Martin. We read 2 Nephi 31, a great chapter. It teaches very clearly the doctrine of Christ and the importance of Baptism. As we finished the chapter we asked him what he learned and he told us, “I learned that I need to be baptized now.” He is going to be baptized the 21st of February. It is amazing that through the Book of Mormon, doctrines such of that of baptism are made clear so that anyone can understand and come to know that they are true.

Well that’s all for this week. I’ve got to do quite a lot before tomorrow

Week 46 Letter January 27, 2014

Hello Everybody!

Hope you are all having a great week! Most likely cooler than mine. The hot season is already beginning. Today it is 81 degrees. Its wierd to have the temperature like this in january but im getting used to it.

This week went really well. We are starting to teach a new investigator named Delia. She is awesome! We taught her about the restoration and the Book of Mormon. She did not even doubt them. She is very excited to learn more. She has already read a lot in the Book of Mormon and will be ready for her baptimal date Febuary 14th.

This week we also did a special fast for one of our investigators. She wants to be baptized but her father does not want to let her. We actually did not get the answer we were expecting. We are going to baptize her but not yet. We felt that we need to help her proove to her father her desire to be baptized to help it be something spiritually amazing for the two of them. It was a great experience to recieve an answer although it was not entirely what we were expecting we know that we are doing the will of god.

Well hope everthing is going well!

Week 44 Letter January 13, 2014

Mexico Villahermosa Temple: Elder Lightheart and Elder Navarro
Hello all!

This week was great. Although it was quite crazy it was still a good week. We had to go to Villahermosa a couple of time this week but it was to go to the temple and for a zone class. It made it so that we didn’t have as much time in Reforma but I learned a ton.

We are also going to be changing houses this week which should be pretty interesting but it will be good to be in a bigger house.

This week I got to teach English. We have been offering English classes to people and a lot of them are interested. It has been fun to teach my language and to talk in English for a bit.

We have been having a great time here in Reforma. There are a lot of great people here. The members are awesome. This week we started teaching an investigator. She was very interested in the Book of Mormon. It was great to see how the Book of Mormon helps people. She had a lot of questions which we were able to answer with the Book of Mormon. It is an amazing tool that God has given us!

Well, talk to you all soon!

Week 43 Letter January 6, 2014

Hello everyone!
Hope that you are all doing great in this New Year! 2014 already! No way. Hope you have all had a good one so far.

This week was rather weird. It was hard because no one was home. It was strange to not have anyone around. We were the only ones in the street which is really weird for Mexico. The holidays are really different here. New Years is more celebrated than Christmas. They also have another day that they celebrate which is actually today! Happy Three Kings Day everybody.

The tradition for this day is that the people eat rosco de reyes. It’s a bread that they put some little dolls in. And if you take the piece with doll you have to make the tamales. I have had 3 pieces so far and I already took out two dolls. Not a big fan so far of rosco de reyes. Though it does taste pretty good.

Well hope you are all doing well!
Until next week!

Week 42 December 30, 2013

Hey everybody!

I’ll be a little shorter this week for time’s sake.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody! It has been a little harder for us with everyone and without really knowing anyone. It made it a lot more work for us to reach our goals. Not that it is a bad thing. Just not exactly what we are used to I guess. It has helped teach me more about the importance of work in missionary work. It really is the secret. We could have gotten really down on ourselves or made excuses but we just kept working and working and the Lord did the rest for is.

I have really loved being able to teach about Christmas. There is really a special spirit in the air and it is always great to help people remember about Christ in this time. We showed the new bible nativity video by the church to a lot of people. I recommend that you all go and watch it before this Christmas season is up!

I gave a talk yesterday on the true spirit of Christmas and talked about gifts. In particular a gift we can give to god. I focused on sharing the gospel with someone. I invited the branch to give a gift to God this Christmas season. And I would like to invite all of you to do so as well. Show our heavenly Father your love to him by reaching out to one of his Children.

Hope you are all doing great and have a wonderful holiday season

Until next week
